Some XJ steering racks are interchangeable as complete units, but their component parts may differ. Case in point are tie rod ends. Pre-1982.5 cars were fitted with imperial-threaded ends (JLM9726) while later cars featured metric threads (JLM1098). Luckily, itËÇÖs easy to identify which is which. On earlier cars, the OD of the male thread on the track rods is the same diameter as the unthreaded portion. On racks with metric-thread tie rod ends, the threaded portion of the track rod has a noticeable step, meaning the OD of the threaded portion is smaller than that of the unthreaded portion.
